The aim of this lesson is to explain the importance of a safe workplace and how it influences a person’s well-being. At the end of this lesson, you should be able to describe a safe workplace and explain how the workplace atmosphere can have multiple consequences on a person’s well-being.
Across Europe, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBT+Q+) youth entering the labour market often face experiences of prejudice, discrimination, victimisation in the workplace. These experiences are often associated with greater difficulties in successfully integrating and adapting into professional environments.
Difficulties in successful integration and adaptation are often caused by workplace contexts that are commonly heteronormative and cis-normative. In some instances, harassment and victimization experiences that may emerge during childhood and adolescence, particularly in school or family settings, persist and increase in workplace settings.
From the labour and social sphere we must demand inclusive, diverse workplaces and free of violence and harassment towards LGBT+Q+ people. A safe working environment is one in which; people should not hide their sexual orientation and gender identity at work, they do not suffer discrimination or harassment on the basis of their gender identity or expression, their freedom or integration is not limited and they do not encounter more difficulties than hetero/cis normative people to access a job or promote in their employment. Likewise, a safe work environment is one in which, when an act of discrimination or hatred occurs, for example, physical and verbal aggression against LGBT+Q+ people, these are reported and not normalized.
Below you will find materials to learn more about safe working environments.
The following document provides you with an overview of best practice guidance for employers in the UK. From this, you will be provided with a summary of the legal protections available in the UK and be able to determine what you should expect in the workplace. You can access the materials HERE.
