The aim of this lesson is to introduce you to the key terminology and definitions as they are currently understood and used in everyday life. At the end of the lesson, it is expected that you will be able to explain the difference between sex, gender, gender identities and sexual orientation. Also, you should be able to list and describe different forms of sexual orientation and gender identities (LGBT+Q+) on completion.
A person’s Sex describes their anatomy and biology. It is typically assigned at birth and is most commonly determined by whether they have a penis or a vagina. Sex is also determined by hormones, chromosomes and internal reproductive organs. Sex can be broken down into:
A person’s Sexuality commonly refers to their Sexual Orientation which reflects their individual pattern of sexual and romantic desires, behaviors and identities that they express. It is expressed both internally, by whom a person is aroused by and attracted to, and externally by the way in which someone identifies to others.
The majority of people identify as Heterosexual. This means that they are attracted to and engage in romantic/sexual relationships with people of the opposite sex. Bisexual means that a person is attracted to both men and women to a stronger or lesser degree. Being Gay/lesbian implies that a person is sexually or romantically attracted to people of the same gender as they are.
A person’s sexual orientation is not considered to be an either/or part of them. A person’s sexuality can exist on a spectrum with their attractions and desires towards people of the same or a different can vary and change over their lifespan.
Sexual orientation can also include Asexual (where a person has an absence of sexual desire/attraction), Pansexual (where a person is attracted to people of multiple genders) and Questioning (where someone is still exploring their sexuality).
Gender is a term that refers to the psychological, cultural and social characteristics that we think of as belonging to males or females. Within many western cultures, there are a series of behaviors and attributes that are commonly associated with genders, these are called Gender Roles.
Gender Identity refers to an individual’s own individual perception of their gender and their Gender Expression is how a person chooses to present themselves to others. Forms of Gender Expression can include presenting as either Masculine or Feminine a combination of both.
Gender has traditionally been understood in binary terms, with a person’s gender identity matching their sex as assigned at birth. This is the case for many people and this is known as being Cisgender. Where a person’s gender identity does not match their sex as assigned at birth this is referred to as being Transgender or Trans.
Being Trans does not necessarily mean that a person has had any medical intervention or undergone surgical procedures but some Trans people do obtain Gender Affirming medical interventions.
Gender Diversity is an umbrella term that is used to capture all gender identities that don’t fall into a strict male or female dichotomy or binary. Some people identify as Non-Binary as their own gender identity if they feel that the traditional male or female dichotomy does not capture their identity.
Typically, we speak about a person’s gender identity using their Pronouns. Some people identify as He/Him, some as She/Her, or use gender-neutral pronouns such as They/Them.
