The aim of this lesson is to provide you with the latest information on the situation of LGBT+Q+ in your country. At the end of this lesson you should be able to describe the current situation in the country regarding LGBT+Q+ in the workplace, list key mechanisms for discrimination prevention, list key mechanisms for discrimination reporting and indicate key stakeholders which can help in fighting discrimination or report it.
Within the UK, LGBT+Q+ people are protected by the Equality Act (2010) which identifies 9 protected characteristics (i.e., sexual orientation and sex) from discrimination. Same-sex couples have been able to get married in England and Wales since 2013 having previously been able to enter into Civil Partnerships since 2005. Same-sex marriages were permitted in Scotland in 2014 and have only been permitted in Northern Ireland since 2020.
Trans and gender diverse people have been able to legally change their gender in the UK since the passing of the Gender Recognition Act (2004). Trans people are able to access gender affirming healthcare through the National Health Service (NHS), however, this is a heavily oversubscribed service and waiting times to access support are long.
